Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, France
Growing social divisions and fear of differences often prevent young people from connecting across cultures. Notre Palette Culturelle was created to respond to this challenge by using different arts as universal tools of communication. Artistic expression helps break down stereotypes, foster empathy and build bridges between people of diverse backgrounds.
Six groups participated in this youth exchange project, with participants from France, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Moldova. Each group comprised 6 youth participants aged between 18 and 23 and one group leader. In total, the project involved 36 young participants, 6 group leaders and 2 facilitators.
Promotion of social inclusion and well-being, addressing Youth Goal no. 3 (Inclusive Societies) and Youth Goal no. 5 (Mental Health and Well-being).
Promotion of environmental sustainability, aligning with Youth Goal no. 10 (Sustainable Green Europe) and the European Green Deal.
Learning through experience by enhancing skills and competencies, supporting Youth Goal no. 8 through non-formal and informal learning methods.
Supporting innovation and good practice exchange in youth work, particularly in addressing mental health and sustainability.
During eight days in Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, France, young people from six countries came together to explore how art can foster meaningful intercultural dialogue. The programme combined a wide range of non-formal learning methods, including ice-breakers, role plays, storytelling, collective painting, dance movement workshops and other creative activities.
From the very beginning, sessions such as the opening and introduction of the program and the “personal goals” circle encouraged participants to reflect on their motivations and expectations. Activities like ice-breaking games, the “tree of fears,” and team-building speed dating helped build trust and group cohesion.
To support individual growth, participants kept daily reflection journals and joined group discussions that helped them link their experiences to Youthpass competences. Intercultural evenings gave space for each group to present their food, music and traditions, while outdoor sessions in the surrounding mountains provided a calm environment that helped participants relieve stress and recharge their energy. The mix of creative activities and peer learning ensured that everyone—especially those with fewer opportunities—felt included, valued and supported.
The project had a strong impact on participants’ intercultural awareness and empathy. By expressing themselves through art and music, they discovered new ways of communication that transcended language barriers and cultural stereotypes.
One of the highlights was the creation of a long collective painting, where participants expressed their own vision of inclusion and diversity. They also reached out to the local community during a public event in Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, inviting residents to add their own ideas to the painting and to illustrate what inclusion and diversity meant for them. This activity not only strengthened the connection with locals but also left behind a visible symbol of dialogue and togetherness.
Through non-formal education, participants developed a broad set of skills and competences:
Creative and artistic skills through collaborative workshops and performances such as creating mandalas as a form of intercultural dialogue.
Teamwork and communication skills by working in multicultural groups.
Digital skills while preparing presentations, project promotion and creative outputs.
Language skills by using English as a common working language.
The cultural nights were another highlight, allowing participants to explore the traditions, foods, dances and values of the partner countries. These exchanges created a deeper sense of European identity and appreciation of diversity.
At the end of the exchange, every participant received a Youthpass certificate recognising their learning achievements. Those with fewer opportunities, in particular, gained confidence in their abilities and left inspired to become ambassadors of inclusion and dialogue in their local communities.
The results of Notre Palette Culturelle will continue to spread through follow-up events, creative showcases and dissemination activities in each partner country, ensuring that the positive impact of the exchange reaches far beyond the week spent together in the French Alps.
In Romania one dissemination activity was organized at the "Bolyai Farkas Elméleti Líceum", with a total number of 30 participants
In Hungary one dissemination activity was organized at the BGSZC Pesterzsébeti Technikum, with a total number of 35 participants
